rockin-tom's 1969 Fender
Deluxe Reverb
The
desire to acquire vintage tone is what led rockin-tom to purchase this Fender
Deluxe Reverb amplifier. This model was made in 1969 and
you can tell because it has a silver panel and aluminum trim
around the grill cloth; two features common to 1968 and 1969
Deluxe
Reverbs. Deluxe Reverbs that were manufactured prior to 1968
have black panels, no aluminum trim, and the amp model placard
is white with lettering that looks like handwriting. Post 1969 Deluxe
Reverbs have silver panels, no aluminum trim, and new circuitry
that is not as desirable as older ones in the circle of tone seekers. The label inside this amplifier indicates that it is
the older
AB763 circuit; the desirable circuit for great tone.
When purchased, the amp made some bad noises and needed
servicing. rockin-tom's amp tech replaced the cathode bypass
capacitors and re-tubed the entire chassis with JJ tubes. The
reverb tank had been replaced at some point prior to rockin-tom's
purchase.

Since the original speaker needed reconed, the
next step was to find a suitable replacement speaker to compliment
this tonal work of art. A consultation call to Cowboy Paul , a
Fender amp expert popular in the District of Columbia metropolitan
area including northern Virginia and Maryland, sent rockin-tom on a
journey to find a Jensen C12N with a red and gold label. The speaker
in the above photo is exactly that and was manufactured the second
week of 1967.
To
make the amplifier complete, rockin-tom purchased a Reverb/Vibrato pedal that has been rumored to
belong to the late Danny Gatton. The manager of Atomic Music,
located in Beltsville, Maryland said that Jay Monterose had brought
this footswitch into the store and said that it was from one of
Danny's Super Reverbs. rockin-tom has no reason to doubt the
validity of this story so he is sticking with it.
